LAKES

There are 16 large lakes and many more tarns (Old Norse word for ‘pool’) dotted around the Lake District, and each has unique character with different surrounding landscape.

Wast Water (left photo) is the deepest lake in the Lake District, surrounded by high peaks including Scafell Pike, offering wild and dynamic landscape.

MOUNTAIN PASSES

There are many great mountain passes in the Lake District, and Hardknott Pass is one of the best roads with great view over the Eskdale Valley and beyond, to the Irish Sea when weather permits. It must be noted some mountain passes are a little challenging and may be more suited for confident drivers and riders.
